TABLE OF CONTENTS

Use this guide when your DAKboard CPU or Wall Display has a power, picture, touch, or other hardware problem. Most problems that look like hardware are really network problems, so start by checking your connection. Then work through the section that matches what you see. Each section explains why the problem happens and how to fix it.

For problems during setup, error messages when the Display starts, or content that does not update, see the other guides in DAKboard Troubleshooting: Start Here.

Before You Start:

  • Unplug the power before you move the device or reseat any cable or SD card.
  • Use the power supply that came with your device. Other power supplies can cause shutdowns, error messages, and damaged SD cards.
  • Never force a cable into a port. Plug cables in gently and straight.
  • Only open a Wall Display to upgrade it or replace its SD card, and do not take it apart further than the steps in the SD card replacement article for your model. Going further can expose you to electric shock.

Most Problems Are Network Problems:

If your Display turns on and shows something, but the content is old, it says No Internet, it freezes, or it keeps going offline, the cause is almost always the WiFi or network connection, not the hardware.

Identify Your Device:

Some steps depend on your model. To find which CPU or Wall Display you have, and which computer is inside it, see the model table in Upgrading Your DAKOS Device. To check your DAKOS version, see Finding Your DAKOS Version.

No Power or No Lights:

Why this happens: The outlet, power strip, or smart plug has no power, the power cable is loose, or the power supply has failed.

How to fix it:

  1. Plug something else into the same outlet to check that it has power. If you use a power strip or smart plug, plug the device straight into the wall to test.
  2. Unplug the power cable at both ends and plug it back in gently.
  3. Check that you are using the power supply that came with the device (see the table below).
  4. If it still has no power, contact support (see Contact Support, Warranty, and Returns).

ModelPower
Wall Display Touch 22 and Touch 2712 V, 5 A power supply with a 3.5 x 1.2 mm round (barrel) plug.
CPU v4 and CPU v55 V, 3 A USB-C power supply. A Phone Charger can be used for testing.
CPU Mini5 V Micro USB power supply. A Phone Charger can be used for testing.
V2, V2 Plus, Wall Display 27, AOC, and Dell Wall DisplaysA standard power cord. The computer inside is powered by the monitor's own power supply, so if the monitor has no power, the computer has none either.

Powering a CPU from a TV or monitor USB port usually does not work, because most TVs only power their USB ports after they detect a signal. Use the CPU's own power supply. See CPU v4 Details, CPU v5 Details, or CPU Mini Details for details.

Black Screen, No Signal, or No Input:

Why this happens: The "No Signal" or "No Input" message comes from the monitor or TV, not from DAKOS. It usually means the wrong input is selected, the HDMI cable is loose or faulty, or the power supply is not giving the computer enough power.

How to fix it:

  1. Select the right input. On a Touch 22 or Touch 27, press Up or Down buttons on the back to open the input list: D1: HDMI is the built-in DAKboard computer (D3: HDMI is the external HDMI port for another device). On a V2, V2 Plus, or Wall Display 27, press button 2, choose HDMI, press 2 to confirm, then 1 to exit. The full steps with photos are in DAKboard Display has a "No Signal" or "No Input" message.
  2. Check the power light on a V2, V2 Plus, or Wall Display 27: blue means the CPU has power and the right input is selected. If it turns orange, the input is wrong or there is no signal, so repeat step 1.
  3. Reseat the HDMI cable (CPUs Only). Unplug the power, unplug the HDMI cable at both ends, plug it back in, then plug the power back in. For best performance, on a CPU v4 or v5, use the HDMI port closest to the power port. The second port only shows the same Screen.
  4. Try another HDMI cable or input. Keep cables to about 10 ft (3 m) or less, and use a 4K-rated cable rather than an 8K one. Do not use adapters to DVI, VGA, or DisplayPort; they are not supported and may cause your CPU to fail loading.
  5. Upgrade DAKOS if your device runs an older version (see Upgrading Your DAKOS Device).
  6. If the screen is still black, contact support.

If the Display keeps restarting or stops on the loading screen, see DAKOS Troubleshooting: Startup and Error Messages. For more about cables and ports, see DAKboard HDMI Support.

The Display Turns Off or Restarts by Itself:

The Display Turns Off on a Schedule:

Why this happens: An On/Off (Sleep) Schedule is set for your Screen, or your TV's own power-saving or sleep settings are turning it off.

How to fix it: Check the schedule in your Screen settings (see How to Set the On/Off (Sleep) Schedule). The schedule needs HDMI CEC turned on in your TV (it may be called CEC, ARC, or Anynet+) and the TV's power-saving modes turned off. On a Touch 22 or Touch 27 that stopped following its schedule a configuration change may have been made to the monitor settings accidentally. To correct this, reset the monitor's settings by pressing Menu, go to Other > Reset, press Menu to confirm, then Exit.

The Display Turns Off or Restarts at Random:

Why this happens: This can be caused by configuration issues in DAKOS, a power supply that is not providing enough power, or a loose HDMI connection that makes DAKOS restart.

How to fix it:

  1. Upgrade to the latest DAKOS first (see Upgrading Your DAKOS Device). This fixes many configuration issues, especially on the Touch 22 and Touch 27.
  2. Make sure you are using the power supply that came with the device, plugged straight into a wall outlet.
  3. Reseat the HDMI cable at both ends.
  4. If you see a "Low Voltage Warning" on an older DAKOS version, upgrading removes it (see DAKOS Troubleshooting: Startup and Error Messages).
  5. If it keeps happening after upgrading, contact support.

The Touchscreen Does Not Respond:

Why this happens: The touch layer did not start, a cable is missing, or the touchscreen is not supported.

How to fix it:

  1. On your own touch monitor (not a Touch 22 or Touch 27), make sure both the HDMI cable and the USB cable from the monitor are connected to the CPU.
  2. Unplug the USB cable and plug it back in while the Display is on. This reloads the touch layer and fixes a pointer that moves but cannot click, or moves the wrong way after rotating the screen.
  3. Restart the Display by unplugging the power for about 30 seconds.
  4. Check that your touchscreen is supported (see Touchscreen with DAKboard and How to Connect a Touchscreen to DAKOS).

The V2 Plus, Wall Display 27, and Mirror Display are not touchscreens. Infrared Overlays can convert them or you can use a connected USB mouse to access the Touch Functions on these older displays after you upgrade them. Be aware that blocks placed behind other Blocks cannot be touched. See our article Block Layers and How to Use Them for more details on this.

Picture Problems:

Noises, Heat, or Damage:

Why this happens: A buzzing, fan, or electrical noise, a burning smell, a loose or broken power port, or a cracked screen can mean a hardware fault.

How to fix it: Unplug the device right away, do not use it, and contact support with a photo or short video. Do not try to repair it.

SD Card Problems:

The SD card holds DAKOS. Error messages at startup, a command prompt, or a Display that will not finish starting can mean the SD card is not fully seated or DAKOS has become corrupted, usually after a power cut. See DAKOS Troubleshooting: Startup and Error Messages for the fixes, and Upgrading Your DAKOS Device for where the SD card is on your model and how to install DAKOS on a new card.

Restart or Reset Your Device:

NOTE: Older DAKOS versions came with the same built-in SSH login on every device, and those details are public. If you are concerned about this, upgrade to the latest DAKOS, which lets you turn SSH on and set your own login (see DAKOS SSL/SSH Configuration and Use).

Frequently Asked Questions:

Below are the most frequently asked questions about DAKboard hardware.

Why Is My Display Black When the Power Light Is On?

The monitor has power, but it is not receiving a picture from the computer. Check the input and the HDMI cable (see Black Screen, No Signal, or No Input).

Can I Use a Different Power Supply?

We recommend using only the power supply that came with your device. A power supply with the wrong voltage or too little power can cause shutdowns, error messages, and damaged SD cards (see No Power or No Lights). However, as long as the power supply you choose matches the power requirements, you can use replacement power supplies.

Why Does My Display Turn Off at Night?

An On/Off (Sleep) Schedule may be set, or your TV's own sleep or power-saving settings may be on (see The Display Turns Off or Restarts by Itself).

Why Is the Picture Cut Off or Too Big?

The resolution is probably higher than your monitor or TV supports. Set the resolution to Auto or lower it (see Picture Problems).

Why Does Touch Work on One Display but Not Another?

Touch needs a supported touchscreen with both HDMI and USB connected. The V2 Plus, Wall Display 27, and Mirror Display are not touchscreens (see The Touchscreen Does Not Respond).

Can I Open My Wall Display?

Only to upgrade it or replace its SD card, and only as far as the steps in the SD card replacement article for your model (linked from Upgrading Your DAKOS Device). Going further can expose you to electric shock.

Does a Factory Reset Delete My Screens?

No. A factory reset only clears the device settings and WiFi details. Your Screens are saved in your DAKboard account (see Reset Your Device to Factory Settings).

How Do I Know if It Is a Hardware Problem or My WiFi?

If the Display turns on and shows something, even an old Screen or a No Internet message, the hardware is working and the problem is almost always the network (see Most Problems Are Network Problems). If it has no power, no picture at all, or makes unusual noises, it is more likely a hardware problem.
