With DAKboard, you can add Really Simple Syndication (RSS) feeds or News Feeds to your Displays. This article will show you how to do this with both your Predefined and Custom Screens.
Predefined Screen News Tab:
With the Predefined Screen, you can add your feeds by opening the News Tab as seen below:
Click the RSS Enable button to open the News Feeds URL section as seen below:
Copy & Paste your favorite News source RSS Feeds into the space provided. Click the Add Another News Feed URL if you want to add more News sources, and then click Save Changes before you leave your tab to apply this to your Screen.
For Customers with touchscreens. We have included the option to allow you to navigate to pages that provide URL links in the news feeds. You can enable this by adding a check to the option seen below:
NOTE: Versions 4.07 and above of the DAKboard OS will allow you to use a Back button or a Swipe Left option to return to your DAKboard Screens from these external links. All older versions can only return to your DAKboard Screen by rebooting the Display. We strongly recommend upgrading to the Latest version of the OS to take full advantage of this option.
Custom Screen RSS and News Blocks:
With the Paid Subscription and the Custom Screens, you have both an RSS Feed block as well as a News Feed block. These are slightly different but can be added to your Screen from the same Add A Block section. Just open your Custom Screen Editor, click the Add A Block button, select the News & Education section, or search for RSS or News feed. See below:
Once you have selected and placed your Blocks, you can open the Block Editor to set them up. Below are the Two Different blocks and how to use them.
RSS Feed Block:
The RSS Feed block allows you to select from your Favorite RSS feeds and add them all to this one block. This section will show you how to add your Feeds to this block and how to customize it with the RSS Block Settings Tab.
Adding RSS Feeds:
To use this, open your block editor and load your RSS feed into the space provided. Then click Save to add it to your Screen. See below:
You can add more RSS Feeds by clicking the Add Another URL button and have as many feeds as you like in the same block. See below:
You can see additional help and a sample RSS feed by clicking the Show RSS Help dropdown menu. This will open the help section seen below:
RSS Block Settings Tab:
With the RSS Feed Block, you have several optional settings available to you. To add these options, open your Block Editor and click on the Settings Tab. See below:
Your optional settings will be detailed below:
- Display As: This option will display your RSS headlines as a horizontal ticker or a vertical list.
- RSS Type: This option will allow you to rotate through your RSS headlines or view them as a Scrolling ticker or list.
- Rotate Headlines: This allows you to set how often the headlines will change.
- Max entries per feed: This allows you to set the maximum number of headlines you wish to see from your selected feeds. This is helpful if the feed is extremely long or contains all the older entries.
- Show Descriptions: This option will include the descriptions or subtitles that are included with each headline, if available.
- Show Source & Timestamp: This will show the publication source and time with each headline if available.
- Show Images: This will show any image for each headline if available.
- Enable Links: This will allow you to enable URL links and hyperlinks to allow you to redirect to the story on your Display. Caution: Only click links to sites you trust; unknown URLs from RSS feeds may contain unsafe or malicious content
NOTE: When navigating to an external link from a DAKboard OS device on version 4.06 or lower, the only way to return to your screen is to reboot your DAKboard OS device. For versions 4.07 and above, we have now included the ability to return to your Screen. See our article Touchscreen with DAKboard OS for more details.
News Feed Block:
With the News Feed block, you can select from several preloaded News Sources, or Country & Category selections. See below:
News Sources:
The Sources, seen above, are the most popular News Sources that offer feeds. To select any or all of these sources, place a check next to the ones you want to view and click Save. See below:
Note: Any sources that are greyed out, as with Reuters in the image above, indicate that the source is not returning articles from our requests. You can still select these links, however, no articles will be displayed from them until the source publishes new articles.
Country & Category:
With the Country & Category selection, you can pick from several countries that have national news feeds we can access. See below:
You can then select from the Category of News you wish to see from these sources. By default, it is set to All news categories, but by clicking the dropdown menu, you can select from the options below:
Once you have completed your selections, click Save to add your feeds to your Display.
Frequently Asked Questions:
Below are the most Frequently Asked Questions for the RSS and News Feed blocks:
Can we ask for More Sources on the News Block to select from?
You can always ask for more from us. As long as the requested source has a feed we can access, we can see about adding it.
